Wine Clubs
by Greville Havenhand
When Wine on the Web started these pages I asked, "Who needs wine clubs?" I said that we can all buy wine at home or in a restaurant and there is a surfeit of books and newspaper articles that try to tell us about wines, not to mention dozens of websites, notably this one, to give us advice. What I wrote then still stands. We don't need them but there are a large number of them about and they give many people a great deal of pleasure. Like-minded people get together in a variety of venues all around the country to taste, discuss and above all enjoy wine. Some of them are run by committees, some by dedicated individuals, others by local wine merchants keen to sell their wares. There are those that are entirely self-contained, others that have visiting speakers from the trade, from the press and the wine education sector. Some deal only with expensive and fine wines, others are only interested in inexpensive wines for everyday drinking, but most are groups of enthusiasts who get together to enjoy wine and each other's company and interests, varying their programmes between members evenings and visiting speakers. Most have some sort of annual dinner, some, including the one to which I belong – the Dulwich Wine Society – organize visits to vineyards and wine areas abroad. A few have their own websites.
The object of this page is to make it easy for people who might like to try such a club or society to find one in their area. We have a list of societies with their contact numbers and each month feature a club in more detail. These details are kept in our database, with a ready link to them. Inevitably these can become out of date and secretaries are encouraged to send new information.
There is an idea that wine societies are self-regarding groups of wine snobs who use only rarefied "winespeak". I have visited many clubs, usually to give tutored tastings, but I have not yet met one of these. There is always a member or two who is prone to adjectival excess and who wants to emulate the Clarks and Coopers of this world and also the "anorak" - the vinous equivalent of the train spotter or twitcher - who tastes a lot, remembers the names and years of most, but rarely sits down long enough to enjoy a bottle with a meal or with friends. Most societies have a varied membership with a wide range of knowledge, from the absolute beginner to the professional or semi-professional. I have usually found a relaxed and convivial atmosphere and a genuine sense of enjoyment.
We try to give a flavour of what to expect at each society, and to give details of the times and frequency of meetings. Many clubs contact us with their details, but others never respond to enquiries. Perhaps they have sufficient members, perhaps they think that we are going to charge them for listing (which is not the case). If you want to publicise your club, please contact us by e-mail at Editor@wineontheweb.co.uk.
