Audio and video files are large .... for example, our Martini &
Rossi Radio Postcard is 1.35Mb. If you were to download this file in its entirety before you started to play it, you could be waiting for a long time. Hence, streaming media! Streaming
media allows you to start playing seconds after you have started the download. This happens because the file is read into a buffer and, as soon as there is enough information within
that buffer, the contents start playing.
Various vendors provide software to enable users to retrieve
streaming media, but Wine on the Web has chosen Microsoft. Windows Media Player or Microsoft Media Player, as it's called for non-Windows users, is available for the following:
- Windows with Internet Explorer 4.0 or later
- Windows without Internet Explorer 4.0
- Windows NT 4.0 Digital Alpha
- Windows 3.x (Beta Player)
- Macintosh (Beta Player)
Windows Media Player makes it easy to access content, whether it's on your hard
drive or on the Internet. It plays more kinds of content with greater flexibility than ever before including ASF, Real Video/Real Audio 4.0, MPEG 1, MPEG 2, WAV, AVI, MIDI
, MOV, VOD, AU, MP3, and QuickTime files, making it convenient to access most multimedia data types. You can select video image sizes of 50%, 100%, 200%, and
full screen, or resize the video to any size you want, depending on your preference and image quality.
In other words, Windows Media Player is a useful tool for viewing any of your
multimedia files, not just for listening to our Radio Postcards.
