Argentina is the land of silver and Argento has virtually achieved
national status from its lofty vineyards at around 3,000 feet in Mendoza on the eastern slopes of the Andes. Viticulture in Argentina dates back to the middle of the 16th century when Jesuit priests
brought the Pais red variety from Spain. However the results are not believed to have been too encouraging. Subsequently, some 300 years ago, French settlers brought Malbec from Bordeaux which succeeded
in the Andes climate.
Argento Malbec, made by the Nicholas Catena winery, is the colour of violets and has aromas of plums and damsons with some chocolate notes. On the palate there is a little
touch of vanilla from 3 months oak aging, plus ripe bramble and blackcurrant flavours. It is full-bodied at 13.5% and the tannins are soft and well integrated.
Food guide: with coarse patés and
terrines, most red meats including game and full flavoured cheeses such as mature Cheddar.
